Legendary Photographs of David Bowie and the Rise of an Iconic Figure

A Visual Chronicle of the Ziggy Stardust Era Amidst Music, Art, and Staging

Mick Rock. The Rise of David Bowie. 1972–1973 is a moving tribute to the early 1970s and David Bowie’s legendary ascent as the artistic figure Ziggy Stardust. This photography book documents the moment Bowie redefined music, identity, and performance, becoming one of the most influential figures in pop culture.

The volume was compiled in 2015 with David Bowie’s participation by Mick Rock, his closest photographer during the Ziggy Stardust era. Rock had direct access to the artist and created one of the most important visual documentations in rock history.

The collection brings together iconic live photographs, studio portraits, album cover images, backstage scenes, and moments from life on tour. It links the stage persona of Ziggy Stardust with the artist behind the character, showcasing the creative energy of an entire era.
