Jean Michel Basquiat began his career in the late 70s under the name SAMO within the New York street art scene. His early works consisted of provocative text fragments and symbols in urban spaces. With his transition to the established art world, he developed a unique style based on expressive figures, words, and symbolic structures. Themes such as identity, history, politics, jazz, sports, and street life define his work.
By the early 80s, Basquiat was already exhibiting in prestigious galleries and achieved international recognition. His collaboration with Andy Warhol and his rapid rise made him a central figure in contemporary art. Despite his premature death at 27, he remains one of the most influential icons of modern art.
This edition includes high-quality reproductions of his paintings, drawings, and notebook sketches. The volume is completed with texts by editor Hans Werner Holzwarth and an essay by curator Eleanor Nairne that contextualize his work and artistic evolution.
