A visual diary of New York pop culture
Intimate insights into the Factory, Studio 54 and the art scene of the 60s–80s
A visual historical document from New York in the 1960s to 1980s: Andy Warhol - Polaroids 1958-1987 It offers an up-close look at the world of the Factory, Studio 54, and international art and pop culture. The photobook brings together over 150 original Polaroid photographs of Andy Warhol and it comes across as an unvarnished, spontaneous visual diary of an entire era.
Before social media existed, Warhol was already documenting his surroundings with an instant camera: artists, musicians, designers, actors, and icons of the time—including Mick Jagger, Jack Nicholson, Yves Saint Laurent, and Debbie Harry—appear in direct, often raw and unposed snapshots. These are complemented by self-portraits and scenes from Warhol's personal life.
This photobook, created in collaboration with the Andy Warhol Foundation, combines art, pop culture and the history of photography to offer a unique overview of New York's creative center during its most formative period.
Author: Richard B. Woodward is a New York-based art critic and writes regularly for the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.
